Arboriculture is the practice and science involved in the selection, planting and maintenance of individual trees and other woody plants, and the study of how these kinds of plants and trees grow and react to cultural practices and the environment they are in. The main activities involved in Arboriculture include planting, fertilisation, pruning, shaping, removal and surgery, with each of these activities revolving around maintaining tree health and safety.

An arborist, otherwise known as a tree surgeon or arboriculturist, is one with thorough trained in the field of Arboriculture (see above), and who therefore has a sound knowledge of tree anatomy, biology and biomechanics, and is competent in a range of professional Arboricultural practices.

Arborists focus on the health and safety of individual trees in urban areas, making arborists quite different to either foresters (those who look after forests) and loggers (lumberjacks, those who cut down trees).

Trees provide great benefits for our community, they are also often huge, heavy complex organisms that, to survive harmoniously within a human environment, require professional monitoring and care. Arborists are specifically trained to carry out this work. They are also highly trained in the safe removal of trees, even in areas of limited access.

Tree loppers are NOT TRAINED nor are they qualified to care for trees. Please read the Tree Lopping information page of this website.
Rather than care for the health of the trees, loppers perform a severe kind of pruning which removes all branches and growth except for the main truck and perhaps a few large branches, without any consideration for the safety of the tree or surrounding property.

Trees within an urban setting (or in a people-dominated environment) are often exposed to disturbances caused by all sorts of things, from human interaction to natural causes, and typically need some assistance to help improve their chances of survival.
Tree pruning (hyperlink to tree pruning page) is an important activity conducted by arborists to improve tree health and tree structure so that the tree can continue to grow strong without causing damage to other property or other trees. Pruning is done for a variety of reasons:

  • Safe removal of dead, diseased, decayed or weak branches
  • Property protection – pruning branches away from buildings, power lines, street lighting, fences and so forth
  • Access – to allow safe access of vehicles and/or pedestrians.
